Episode #50: God Is Good
In light of the recent shootings in Texas and Ohio, it’s important to know that God is Good. Jeremy and Gordon offer powerful insights. Join the discussion!
Tragedy: 2 mass shootings in USA recently. Motivated by hate. Wrong place, wrong time. Pain and suffering.
People struggle with God is Good because of tragedy.
If you do not have a Biblical worldview, you will view these events in a different way. The question comes up, Why?
That is the reason for this series, so we can get to know God. Watch the Series https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLUpjwBzeCDKG7G0C3fXyiy-M7NoGChOOJ
The Blessings and promises in Scripture tells us of the goodness of God.
All of the attributes of God together show us that God is in control and full of goodness and mercy. He is the defining One. He defines what is good and shows us what is good through His loving acts of mercy.
Evil has come into the world. We do not blame God because of the works of evil in our world.
Mark 10:17-22
“Now as He was going out on the road, one came running, knelt before Him, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?” So Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery,’ ‘Do not murder,’ ‘Do not steal,’ ‘Do not bear false witness,’ ‘Do not defraud,’ ‘Honor your father and your mother.’” And he answered and said to Him, “Teacher, all these things I have kept from my youth.” Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.” But he was sad at this word, and went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.”
The only good, true, perfect being in the universe is God. We attempt in vain to establish our own goodness and worth before God like the rich, young ruler but fall short of God’s standard. God has a different way for people to become ‘right’ or ‘good.’ He justifies us from all sin through our faith in Jesus Christ. There is no heavenly balance that weighs our good deeds and bad deeds. God cancels our record of bad deeds and grants us righteousness through Jesus. We are justified by faith apart from any goodness or good deeds done.
“Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.” Romans 3:24 (NKJV)
“If God hasn’t said anything hard to you, you haven’t heard Him say anything at all.”
Experiencing God’s Goodness:
1. Only God is good. You must recognize the goodness of God and your sinfulness. You must experience Him to know that He is good and you are not.
“As newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.” 1 Peter 2:2–3 (NKJV)
2. You can’t be ‘good without God.’ We all struggle with acceptance and being “good enough.” If we would admit it, we all know we are lacking.
“Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.” Jude 24–25 (ESV)
3. Give up or go away sad. Whatever is more important to you than Jesus, is keeping you from Jesus. He knows it and loves you still. But if you don’t give it up, you will go away sad.
In the case of the rich, young ruler, the Bible doesn’t tell us if he ever gave up his riches and came back to Jesus. God knows our heart. He knows the thing/s that are keeping us from Him. If you were having a one-on-one encounter with Jesus what would He ask of you? You don’t have to go away from this worship time sad.
