This is My One – Jack

This Is My 1 Jacks Story 810x450

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]For Sharon Lyons, the one she prayed for consistently, passionately, and faithfully, was her husband, Jack. She lived in such a way that testified of her new life free of sin and death through her faith in Jesus Christ. Jack saw the change and peace in Sharon since she confessed her sin and need of a Savior and asked Jesus to forgive her and make her new. He just didn’t know how to attain it. Watch Jack’s testimony in this quick 10-minute video of forgiveness when he thought he was unforgivable!

Jack’s story is full of love, grace, and forgiveness. Even in the dark times.

This year’s theme is “Who’s Your One?” emphasizing praying for, witnessing to, and inviting one person in your life to faith in Jesus Christ. As a church body, we are naming our One that we will commit to pray for and share our faith with. The 30-Day Prayer Guide will guide you in specific prayers for your One while the 40-Day Devotional will encourage you as you lead your one to Jesus. Who’s Your One?

“Pray also for me, that the message may be given to me when I open my mouth to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel. For this I am ambassador in chains. Pray that I might be bold enough to speak about it as I should.” Ephesians 6:19-20 #WhosYour1[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

My One

Whos_Your_One_810x450

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Imagine if every believer could answer that question with the name of a person who is far from God—a person for whom they’re praying and with whom seeking to share the gospel. That’s the intention behind Who’s Your One. We believe God’s people don’t merely need another method for evangelism—what they need is a white-hot passion to see people who are far from God experience the new life He offers through Jesus Christ.

Starting this coming New Year, our church and countless others will prioritize personal ownership of the Great Commission as we each intentionally pursue one person with the hope of the gospel. At times, it seems the mission is simply too complex and too vast for churches like ours and people like us. While we can’t do everything, we can do something. We can all take responsibility for one. And, because of God’s power and the work of His Spirit, each of our ones can add up to make a significant impact for God’s kingdom.

Who’s Your One?

WYO_Header 810x450

Imagine if every believer could answer that question with the name of a person who is far from God – a person for whom they are praying and with whom they are seeking to share the gospel. We do not need another method for evangelism, what we need is a burden to see people who are far from God experience the new life He offers through Jesus Christ.

Who’s your one? Who is the person in your life that does not have a personal relationship with the Lord?
We want to invite you to:

  • Pray first: Ask God to reveal who your one ought to be. IDENTIFY
  • Pray: Don’t just pray about them, but really pray for your one. INTERCEDE
  • Create connection points for relationship building with your one. INVESTMENTS
  • Look for opportunities to have spiritual conversations with your one. INTENTIONALITY
  • Make an effort to share the gospel with your one. INVITATION

Every great movement of God has begun with His people praying and evangelizing. As we seek to Reach Tulsa and Touch the World, we invite every member of every church to identify someone who is far from God, intercede for that person, make Investments into the life of that person and invite that person into the Kingdom and repeat until ALL know Him. Who’s Your One?

IDENTIFY:

Spend some time in prayer asking God to reveal to you who “your One” should be. It may be easier to just choose someone, but it is much more important to join God where He is already working. You want to be Spirit-led. While there may be many people in need, everyone in need may not be open. Ask God to help you identify that person.  (Philippians 2:2 – 3)

INTERCEDE:

“Long before you talk to people about God, you should talk to God about those people.” Commit to pray for “your One” on a daily basis. Pray for their salvation, but also pray for other aspects of their life.

For example, pray for their marriage and family, employment situation, health, finances, etc.

Pray for them the way you wish that someone would pray for you. Ask them how you might best pray for them. As you are now praying for them on a regular basis, it gives you more to discuss as you follow up on the various prayer points. Also, pray for openness to the gospel; pray for your own boldness and opportunities to have spiritual conversations. (John 17:20 – 21)

INVESTMENTS:

Create opportunities to build the relationship by inviting “your One” to have a meal together, or spend time doing other activities that would allow you to get to know each other better. Find out what they enjoy and show a genuine interest in what they enjoy. “People do not care how much you know, they want to know how much you care.”  (Proverbs 11:30)

INTENTIONALITY:

Look for opportunities to have spiritual conversations; this can be done by asking probing questions to gauge “your One’s” openness. These must be organic conversations that flow out of the overflow of a genuine relationship. They are not as effective when they seem forced. While you do not want to overwhelm them by quoting a bunch of scriptures, it is helpful to have biblical knowledge because you always want to present the Bible as the authority. Your own testimony can be a wonderful tool in communicating the difference Christ can make in a life.

Remember that you are not the star of the story. (2 Corinthians 5:20)

INVITATION:

Having a clear and concise gospel presentation is important. Remember that you are not inviting them to join your church; you are inviting them to join the Kingdom of God. A clear gospel message should have the following elements: God, Man, Sin, Jesus, Repentance and Faith. Many people do not accept Christ because no one asks them to do so. Remember to give “your One” an opportunity to respond by giving an invitation.

  (Acts 4:12)

REPEAT UNTIL ALL KNOW HIM.

a particular attitude toward or way of regarding something; a point of view.

We are all made for more. The “more than” can vary. More than the American Dream, more than a job title or a career advancement or your culture’s expectations and values, more than the limits you put on yourself. Made for More is an invitation to expand your understanding of purpose.

What is Perspectives?

Perspectives is a discipleship course that takes you through the Bible, back in time, and across the globe. A fantastic array of pastors, theologians, missiologists and mobilizers will challenge and inspire you as they help bring the course content to life with their personal experiences and expertise. You will join a community of believers as you journey together toward a better understanding who God is, what He is doing, and your role within that. Whether you are single, married, a student, a homemaker, a professional or retired, Perspectives will encourage and challenge you to live on purpose, with purpose.

God has a “world-sized” role for every Christian in His global purpose. Whether people go to distant countries or stay at home is a secondary issue. The primary issue is what most people are hungry to discover: vision to live a life of purpose. Discovering that vision makes this course valuable, and perhaps crucial, for any Christian.

What is God’s Heart for All People

Back in Time

From Genesis to the prophets, Jesus Christ to the early church, and Constantine to today, you will see how God has been moving, how the global Church has responded, and what the greatest needs in world evangelization remain today. Perspectives will sharpen your focus on the world and help stimulate your thinking about the Great Commission. The course surveys the global cause of Christ in four dimensions: Biblical, Historical, Cultural, and Strategic.

It isn’t a class about missions, but a course on how every believer can be intimately woven into the story of God using His people to be a blessing to all the peoples of the earth.

Evangelism 101

When I was in college getting my music ministry degree, one of the required courses was Evangelism 101. In this class, we were required to share the gospel with one person (not another student) every week.  For this introverted, shy and quiet person, it was like asking me to get up on a stage in front of millions of people all staring me. My first thought was, “How am I going to get out of this?” followed by “I need this class to graduate!” As a Christian, I believe God when He says we are to go and make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:16-20) and this class was forcing me out of my comfort zone, approach total strangers, and tell them about Jesus!!  (It also improved my prayer life.) Thanks, Dr. Jumper!

I’ll admit, the first week I seriously considered writing a work of fiction to turn in as my assignment. Pushing that thought aside, I asked myself what I was really afraid of; embarrassment, harassment, verbal abuse or worse? Okay, so I was afraid of getting tongue tied and embarrassing myself.  What if I said something really stupid? So, I armed myself with a little script to help me stay on track while trying to keep my cool.  Then I made a plan of attack.

Faith in Action

I would pretend to shop at the local Family Dollar while scoping out unsuspecting female shoppers who I could strike up a conversation.  It went something like this.

“Oh, hi!” <big smile> “Are you finding any good sales today?” <still smiling> They would usually politely smile back and then give me a look as if I worked there and was annoying them. Not giving up, I would continue with something like, “Do you go to church anywhere around here?” to which I would get a “yeah” for a response. Still smiling I would respond with, “That’s great! Where?” By this point, I would get the annoyed sigh and some mumbled response while she turned to escape. But sometimes, I would actually engage with her and we would start talking about church, faith, and Jesus. After 16 weeks of this, I got pretty good.

Lifestyle Evangelism

I passed the class and continued with my studies.  Do you want to know what changed?  Me. I now had a new lifestyle.  Wherever I went, I looked for opportunities to talk to someone about church, faith, and Jesus – always inviting them to church. This is a practice I continue to this day. Just last week we hired a plumber to fix our toilet.  I chatted with him about the details of the job we hired him to do and some questions we had. As he was finishing up, I asked him if he went to church anywhere. He said he did but not very often.  I invited him to church and he said he probably would. The rest is up to the Holy Spirit – not me.

Bob and I went out to dinner this weekend to celebrate our 25thanniversary and our server went above and beyond to make it special for us. As we were leaving I handed her a church business card and asked her if she went to church anywhere. She said yes with a big smile.  I told her about our church and invited her to join us sometime.

Invite Your One

The point is, preparation, practice, and prayer will help you overcome any fear or insecurities you may have sharing your faith or even just inviting someone to church. If you are not in the practice of inviting people to church, try it and you may be surprised how not scary it is and how often people say yes.  They’re just waiting for the invitation.

#SharetheLove this week and invite someone to church with you.  It doesn’t have to be a total stranger – maybe your neighbor, a family member or a friend to make it easy the first time. If we are to make disciples of all nations, it has to start in our own backyards.
