Hymns of Faith – Revive Us Again, 1863

hymns of faith

“Will You not revive us again, that Your people may rejoice in You?” Psalm 85:6

William Paton Mackay, 1839-1885

In his own words, here is the testimony of Scottish doctor William Paton Mackay, author of Revive Us Again.

My dear mother had been a godly, pious woman, quite often telling me of the Savior, and many times I had been a witness to her wrestling in prayer for my soul’s salvation. But nothing had made a deep impression on me. The older I grew the more wicked I became.

One day a seriously injured (laborer) was brought into the hospital. The case was hopeless. He seemed to realize his condition, for he was fully conscious, and asked me how long he would last. I gave him my opinion in as cautious a manner as I could. “Have you any relatives whom we could notify?” I continued. The patient shook his head. His only wish was to see his landlady, because he owed her a small sum, and also wished to bid her farewell. He also requested his landlady send him, “The Book.”

I went to see him on my regular visits at least once a day. What struck me most was the quiet, almost happy expression constantly on his face. After the man died, some things about the deceased’s affairs were to be attended to in my presence. “What shall we do with this?” asked the nurse, holding up a book in her hand. “What kind of book is it?” I asked. “The Bible of the poor man. As long as he was able to read it, he did so, and when he was unable to do so anymore, he kept it under his bed cover.”

I took the Bible and – could I trust my eyes? It was my own Bible! The Bible which my mother had given me when I left my parents’ home, and which later, when short of money, I sold for a small amount. My name was still in it, written in my mother’s hand.

With a deep sense of shame, I looked upon the precious Book. It had given comfort and refreshing to the unfortunate man in his last hours. It had been a guide to him into eternal life, so that he had been enabled to die in peace and happiness. And this Book, the last gift of my mother, I had actually sold for a ridiculous price. Be it sufficient to say that the regained possession of my Bible was the cause of my conversion.”

Doctrine Found in Revive Us Again

  • Jesus is the only begotten Son of God whom He gave to save all people. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16
  • Jesus died for our sins so that we might have redemption. Romans 5:8
  • He is now gone above to reign at God’s right hand and wait the time for His second coming. Acts 1:9-11.
  • The Spirit of light is the Holy Spirit whom the Father sent in Jesus’s name. John 14:26
  • The Spirit has shown us our Savior because He testified of Christ in the written word. John 15:26
  • The Spirit has also scattered our night because He revealed to the apostles all the light of God’s truth. John 16:13
  • Jesus Christ is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. John 1:29
  • It was prophesied that He would come to bear our sins. Isaiah 53:4-5
  • Jesus has cleansed every stain because His blood was the purchase price of our redemption. 1 Peter 1:18-21
  • Our God is a God of all grace. 1 Peter 5:10
  • All of God’s spiritual blessings, the sending of His Son, the revelation of His word, and the offer of salvation–are the results of His wonderful grace. Romans 3:24-26, Ephesians 2:8-10
  • He continues to guide His people by the word of His grace. Acts 20:32
  • Some have objected to the idea of asking God to “revive us again,” because they think that necessarily implies that we have fallen away from God, are spiritually dead, and need to be brought back to life. However, the fact is that all of us have undoubtedly experienced periods of discouragement or other such problems from which we need to be revived or renewed in our service to God. Habakkuk 3:2
  • Every Christian needs to have the inward man revived or renewed every day. 2 Corinthians 4:16
  • The fire from above, which will accomplish this, is the word of God in our hearts. Jeremiah 20:9

CONCLUSION

The chorus repeats this combination of praising God and asking for revival.

“Hallelujah! Thine the glory! Hallelujah! Amen!
Hallelujah! Thine the glory! Revive us again!

As we sing songs like this, we certainly need to be expressing our worship and devotion to God with thankfulness for all His blessings, even as we ask Him to “Revive Us Again.”

This is My One – Jack

This Is My 1 Jacks Story 810x450

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]For Sharon Lyons, the one she prayed for consistently, passionately, and faithfully, was her husband, Jack. She lived in such a way that testified of her new life free of sin and death through her faith in Jesus Christ. Jack saw the change and peace in Sharon since she confessed her sin and need of a Savior and asked Jesus to forgive her and make her new. He just didn’t know how to attain it. Watch Jack’s testimony in this quick 10-minute video of forgiveness when he thought he was unforgivable!

Jack’s story is full of love, grace, and forgiveness. Even in the dark times.

This year’s theme is “Who’s Your One?” emphasizing praying for, witnessing to, and inviting one person in your life to faith in Jesus Christ. As a church body, we are naming our One that we will commit to pray for and share our faith with. The 30-Day Prayer Guide will guide you in specific prayers for your One while the 40-Day Devotional will encourage you as you lead your one to Jesus. Who’s Your One?

“Pray also for me, that the message may be given to me when I open my mouth to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel. For this I am ambassador in chains. Pray that I might be bold enough to speak about it as I should.” Ephesians 6:19-20 #WhosYour1[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

My One

Whos_Your_One_810x450

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Imagine if every believer could answer that question with the name of a person who is far from God—a person for whom they’re praying and with whom seeking to share the gospel. That’s the intention behind Who’s Your One. We believe God’s people don’t merely need another method for evangelism—what they need is a white-hot passion to see people who are far from God experience the new life He offers through Jesus Christ.

Starting this coming New Year, our church and countless others will prioritize personal ownership of the Great Commission as we each intentionally pursue one person with the hope of the gospel. At times, it seems the mission is simply too complex and too vast for churches like ours and people like us. While we can’t do everything, we can do something. We can all take responsibility for one. And, because of God’s power and the work of His Spirit, each of our ones can add up to make a significant impact for God’s kingdom.

Who’s Your One?

WYO_Header 810x450

Imagine if every believer could answer that question with the name of a person who is far from God – a person for whom they are praying and with whom they are seeking to share the gospel. We do not need another method for evangelism, what we need is a burden to see people who are far from God experience the new life He offers through Jesus Christ.

Who’s your one? Who is the person in your life that does not have a personal relationship with the Lord?
We want to invite you to:

  • Pray first: Ask God to reveal who your one ought to be. IDENTIFY
  • Pray: Don’t just pray about them, but really pray for your one. INTERCEDE
  • Create connection points for relationship building with your one. INVESTMENTS
  • Look for opportunities to have spiritual conversations with your one. INTENTIONALITY
  • Make an effort to share the gospel with your one. INVITATION

Every great movement of God has begun with His people praying and evangelizing. As we seek to Reach Tulsa and Touch the World, we invite every member of every church to identify someone who is far from God, intercede for that person, make Investments into the life of that person and invite that person into the Kingdom and repeat until ALL know Him. Who’s Your One?

IDENTIFY:

Spend some time in prayer asking God to reveal to you who “your One” should be. It may be easier to just choose someone, but it is much more important to join God where He is already working. You want to be Spirit-led. While there may be many people in need, everyone in need may not be open. Ask God to help you identify that person.  (Philippians 2:2 – 3)

INTERCEDE:

“Long before you talk to people about God, you should talk to God about those people.” Commit to pray for “your One” on a daily basis. Pray for their salvation, but also pray for other aspects of their life.

For example, pray for their marriage and family, employment situation, health, finances, etc.

Pray for them the way you wish that someone would pray for you. Ask them how you might best pray for them. As you are now praying for them on a regular basis, it gives you more to discuss as you follow up on the various prayer points. Also, pray for openness to the gospel; pray for your own boldness and opportunities to have spiritual conversations. (John 17:20 – 21)

INVESTMENTS:

Create opportunities to build the relationship by inviting “your One” to have a meal together, or spend time doing other activities that would allow you to get to know each other better. Find out what they enjoy and show a genuine interest in what they enjoy. “People do not care how much you know, they want to know how much you care.”  (Proverbs 11:30)

INTENTIONALITY:

Look for opportunities to have spiritual conversations; this can be done by asking probing questions to gauge “your One’s” openness. These must be organic conversations that flow out of the overflow of a genuine relationship. They are not as effective when they seem forced. While you do not want to overwhelm them by quoting a bunch of scriptures, it is helpful to have biblical knowledge because you always want to present the Bible as the authority. Your own testimony can be a wonderful tool in communicating the difference Christ can make in a life.

Remember that you are not the star of the story. (2 Corinthians 5:20)

INVITATION:

Having a clear and concise gospel presentation is important. Remember that you are not inviting them to join your church; you are inviting them to join the Kingdom of God. A clear gospel message should have the following elements: God, Man, Sin, Jesus, Repentance and Faith. Many people do not accept Christ because no one asks them to do so. Remember to give “your One” an opportunity to respond by giving an invitation.

  (Acts 4:12)

REPEAT UNTIL ALL KNOW HIM.
